Athlii Gwaii Legacy Grant Programs

The Athlii Gwaii Legacy grant program is based on three Rs – Renewables, Revitalization, and Restoration. While the Gwaii Trust Society grants typically support shorter duration projects, projects supported by the Athlii Gwaii Legacy grants will be multi-year endeavors. This will enable a more stable commitment to projects that will be bigger in scope.

All applications to the Athlii Gwaii Legacy grant programs will undergo a thorough review process, which could include a feasibility assessment, to ensure that the proposed projects are practical, sustainable, and deliver meaningful benefits to the people of Haida Gwaii. This review process helps us ensure that funding decisions are fair, accountable, and aligned with the long-term well-being of our communities.

Renewables

Athlii Gwaii Legacy Renewables Grant follows Swiilawiid’s ‘The People’s Clean Energy Declaration for Haida Gwaii’ and supports the transformation of our Island’s electrical systems to clean and renewable energy. We are partnering with Haida Gwaii Governments and Advisory Boards through a collaborative process on all project applications under this grant, reflecting the belief that sustainable change is achieved through partnership and empowerment, not prescriptive solutions.

Projects Eligible for Renewables Grant

Micro-hydro
Wind
Tidal
Solar photo-voltaic (not solar thermal)
Creating new Community Energy Planning (CEP) or updating existing CEP
Co-generation biomass projects i.e. combined heat and power
Subsystems (batteries, inverters, and micro-grid controls) that enable GHG emissions reductions through a renewable electricity generation project
Transmission systems that enable GHG emissions reductions through a renewable electricity generation project; or
Some combination of the above, provided the combination of technologies has been proved elsewhere

Projects Not Eligible for Renewables Grant

Heating systems other than co-generation
Geothermal
Non-commercial technologies

Restoration

Athlii Gwaii Legacy Restoration Grant aims to protect and restore the natural environment and ecological integrity of Haida Gwaii’s land, air and waters. Like the Renewable Grant stream, we are partnering with Haida Gwaii Governments and Advisory Boards through a collaborative process on all project applications under this grant, reflecting the belief that sustainable change is achieved through partnership and empowerment, not prescriptive solutions

Stream and riparian restoration
Island forest and forest habitat restoration
Marine shore restoration
Nursery to provide local seedlings for reforestation
Local fish hatcheries
Silviculture (tree planting and spacing, etc)
Research Centre

Projects Not Eligible for Restoration Grants

Projects that have the potential to do harm (for example, introducing invasive species)
Technologies that are not proven

Revitalization

Athlii Gwaii Legacy Revitalization Grant is to support the increase of economic diversification, resilience and self-sustainability of the communities and residents of Haida Gwaii. Revitalization grants are for capital projects that generate jobs on Haida Gwaii and increase our economic diversification.

Projects that have the potential to do harm (for example, cryptocurrency mining or AI data centres)
